Toriko 3

Continuation from Chapter 29

We found a decent number of these Shrooms, enough to make a nice side dish barbecue. The Gluttonous Quartet still demanded more food in addition to all the stuff they had eaten at this place.

Since the Shrooms needed to be grilled, I made some actual steaks along with the Shroom Steaks. Personally, I think the Shrooms tasted better. Let’s collect a bit more and see if Alban can do anything about them.

I was starting to get used to this place.

It was amazing what human beings could get used to, given enough time to mentally prepare, or not prepare.

So, this is how I explained things to maintain my senses.

Some guardian deity, not of Earth or this Other World, but from Somewhere Else, has a penchant for food. All kinds of food.

It was not enough to make food from regular plants and living beings, but they liked to break the barriers of science and magic to create actual food representative of living creatures.

This was not limited to living beings. I found a Cafe Aulait stream, a bubbly lemon fizzy river and even a small brook that gave off a faint alcoholic smell. Grandpa Gon went crazy and sucked the entire brook out of existence. So, I guess there’s no more alcoholic brook now. Not nearby anyway.

Knowing how crazy this place is, there’s probably an entire island with various alcoholic-themed things on it, with beer snack flowers and things…

But, I digress.

Anyway. Now that I have taken in all of this information, I have decided that it was not worth my mental health to think too deeply about these things.

Especially not with the ongoing dialogue between the gods and goddesses that I, this unfortunate mortal, have privy to.

“-didn’t Lord Creator have a pal who likes to eat? I think half of the creatures and living things here were hatched up between them to see how far they could stretch a mortal world without actually imploding it.

“Well, actually-”

“Shh! We’re not allowed to talk about that!”

“Oh, yeah…”

Yep. It’s all very nope for me.

I heard nothing.

In fact, this place is actually pretty great. Just take a look at those fluttering Waffleflies, they are so cute…

I am certainly not thinking about how these creatures mate or reproduce.

“”Aruji~ these little veggie-dessert-fruits are yummy~~””

“Oh my, Sui, those are… I think those are pumpkins? They are really tiny though~”

Sui brought me one of these cute orange pumpkins. They were lighter than expected, and when I tried to sniff them, they smelt like… honey?

“”Aruji~ Aruji~ bite it~””

“… um, sure,” not that I didn’t trust Sui, but I had seen her eat rocks. I have fed her plastic containers and various Other World garbage, so…

Anyway, I took a bite and my teeth sank into something soft and almost cottony.

Woah, this is… quite amazing! I think it’s some kind of marshmallow? Wait, what happens to them when it rain-”

I want a thousand of those!!” Ninril-sama shrieked in my head.

Yup, let’s go back to not thinking.

After the extensive offering session, I decided to explore the rest of the… place with my familiars. It was actually pretty great. The gorgeous green field with its food-themed creatures everywhere.

However, not everything could be eaten.

The rock I had sat on was a proper rock, for example. The grass underfoot was just… grass. And yes, I was somehow tricked by Dora-chan to eat some. Tsk, I’ll get him back for this prank somehow.

“Thi-this is…” Grandpa Gon suddenly paused.

Umu, this smell…” Fer muttered as he pointed his nose to the air.

“M-master… could it be…”

Those weird-looking fruit!! That obviously weird mushroom!!”” Dora-chan yelled.

Aruji~~ This is Sui’s favourite place! Sui’s favourite place~”” Sui shouted while bouncing up and down on Fer’s back.

“This… is oddly a familiar yet strange sight…” I said as I looked around the neat set of trees. I was in some kind of… orchard? Yes, an orchard is the best way to describe this place, considering the fruiting trees and hedges, except… unlike the orchards I had been in, the trees here were… well, very varied to say the least.

For example, take a look at that small bush covered in berries that looked a lot like strawberries, but with rather fluffy… caps? Rather than the star-shaped leafy caps, these were almost like little green wigs.

Well, Dora-chan was popping them into his mouth like nothing, so it was probably fine.

There was also a tree with white apples of all things. Well, I had seen white strawberries in Japan, so these weren’t too shocking compared to, say, the cabbages growing in a small patch of nine plants beyond the tree. The cabbages were oddly solid-looking with a rather beige lustre to them.

Next to the cabbages was a patch of… miniature pumpkins? Well, that’s nothing, I had seen miniature pumpkins in Japan before, so.

Umu? Wait, what’s happening to me?!!”

I jumped, and panic immediately suffused me as I looked around for the danger. What could have shocked the Legendary Beast like that? When I saw nothing, I looked at Fer again and was taken aback.

“Eh?”

Fer had always been magnificent-looking, like a great white wolf with sharp eyes and powerful legs. Right now, however… he looked more like a super huge ball of fur.

“Fer… you are very… furry…” I said lamely.

Dora-chan was laughing and pointing at Furiously Fluffy Fer.

“… What did you eat?” I asked once the threats and laughter had died down a little.

“This thing!” Fer pointed at a small red berry with a snarl. “It made me like this!”

I looked at the red berry. It was the Not-Strawberry that I had seen Dora-chan eat just now. Shrugging, I activated [Appraisal].

[Cuticle Berries]

A type of fruit that makes a person’s hair shiny. They can stimulate hair growth and are also said to cause people with no hair to grow some. It is not uncommon to see middle-aged men chowing down on a pile of Cuticle Berries… before finally giving up and getting themselves a toupee.

“… What the heck is this description? Aren’t they just dissing people with no hair?” Since I have Sui and the special hair growth potion business, I have no need for these…

Still, I gathered a few berries and some cuttings, just to see if they could be grown in the ‘Other World’. By now, I was determined to think of this mind-bending food world as a completely separate world. It would be too confusing even as an offshoot of Demiurgos-sama’s creation.

I mean, sure, the fire-breathing dinosaurs were insane, but this was at a completely different level.

As the dragons teased Fer about his overgrown fur, I stared into the distance and sighed. I had no idea how I got into this place, and most likely won’t know how I will get out.

Since there is no way for me to get away, let’s just go with the flow for now.

Yes, let us flow like the river of Cafe Au Lait~
